Trying to Configure the Workstation settings to Enforce a Reboot
Question
Hi All,
I am trying to configure the workstation setting to enforce a reboot after the maintenance window with a countdown bar for 60 minutes. For some reason it did not work for me I see the first toast notification with the snooze and restart option, my maintenance windows are 6 am to 6 pm. After 6 pm it should enforce to restart with a countdown bar but I don’t see this happening in my case.
Any idea?

Matt John If the Deadline is still in the future, and a User installed themselves ahead of the Deadline, then they can Snooze until the Deadline
(well, until these Settings come into play, then they can snooze every 5 minutes in the hour after the Deadline, until the last 15 minutes when they can’t snooze anymore).

Shane Alexander just my deployment is “Required” not “Available” . is that fine.

Matt John Yes. That is what you want. Because this is going nowhere.

Matt John What settings/actions you perform in testing and in Pilot should be the same as what you do in Production.

Shane Alexander is almost the same, just the Testing on the 2nd Tuesday and pilots a couple of days after, Prod. a week after.
but the Toast notification with countdown bar is not showing. This is my issue if you can assist me with it.

Shane Alexander Deadline for deployment for testing on Tuesday I made it ASAP, then for Pilot I made after hours from hours.
I am not sure if the end-users installed it manually. Shane Alexander, I saw this before if you keep ignoring the reboot you will prompt for the countdown bar which I do not see.

Matt John, We finally have the information we need … the screenshot you put above, and your answer above, show the User (or you, wherever that screenshot was taken) … installed the updates ahead of the Deadline!
So, as I’ve said, and the link above says, they will get a different notification.

Matt John OK, so if that is what settings you have on all your Software Updates deployments then updates can install any time, will completely ignore any Maintenance Windows you have, and install at the Deadline.
Regarding your current “Remind every 5 minutes” setting, you’ve got 60 minutes total, with the last 15 minutes showing the reboot reminder that cannot be hidden. So that should be enough, I’d change that 5 minutes to 1 hour.
There’s another setting or two I think need to be considered, but it’s the weekend, and don’t really care to log in to work to check stuff.

Matt John, what do you mean by “the Deadline was for a couple of hours after”?
Did you, or the User, manually install the update (from Sw Ctr) ahead of the Deadline?
If so, that completely changes the behavior of what you/Users are going to see as far as notifications go.

Matthew Eilbeck / Matt John Grace period is for before the deadline,
i.e. before anything gets installed, Users can defer installs, i.e. defer the deadline. It has nothing to do with post installs/reboots.

Matt John Yes you need the setting set I highlighted above.
But a question, why aren’t your Software Updates deployments installing AND then prompting for a restart during your Maintenance Window?
Can you show the exact same screenshot (I put above) for your deployment?
Also, in your restart settings, wondering why you are reminding Users every 5 minutes after the deadline (when a reboot is needed)? Isn’t that a bit much?

first about the setting I have this setting on my deployment (see it below).
second, this is why I do not know why is no prompting for restart. also, you said why are 5 minutes, I am not sure what is the correct amount of minutes, can you tell me according to my screenshot above?
FYI, the deadline for installing was a couple of hours after so the updates should be reached to the maximum time.

Matt John, do you have a grace period time set in the client settings? That might be extending the installation.

Matthew Eilbeck how can I check it?

Matt John The grace period setting is in the Computer Agent section, in client settings

Deployment won’t restart outside of a Maintenance Windows unless you configure the deployment to override maintenance windows.
With a maintenance window, you are basically saying to the client don’t do anything except during a maintenance window.
