What is the purpose of intune license ? Is it mandatory to have a EMS License to register devices in intune ?

Question

When we create a trail version we are getting Intune licenses, isn’t it possible to register a device to an intune portal with intune license and is it mandate to have EMS license to register Android, Apple and Windows devices ?

    Hello – It’s not mandatory to have EMS licenses to manage iOS Android devices .

    But it’s mandatory to have ONE of the following licenses to manage

    – Intune license
    – EMS
    – M365

      Thanks for the update, so EMS license is required for Windows devices not for Android and IOS as per my understanding.

      How to register or join to Azure for Android and IOS devices with intune license.

        For all devices you need same sort of licenses.

        no change in terms of licenses between iOS android and windows

        That’s not entirely accurate. The licensing model at the moment with MEMCM is still being adjusted and not super clear. The bottom line is that if you currently have a SCCM site, you are covered with Intune licenses, but there’s a catch. You can tenant attach your SCCM site to the cloud, which means you can manage your SCCM clients from the cloud up to a point. Several features such as Desktop Analytics, Autopilot Enrollment, Conditional Access to name a few will not be lighted up unless you have EMS licenses.

          Even thouugh Intune is free for SCCM, you need to remember without Azure AD P1 license it’s nearly useless 🙂
