Client showing with Question mark issue

Question

Hi Everyone,

A happy new year and hope you all are safe!

Need your advice on an issue which we are facing in our environment.

For one specific site in our environment after completing Pxe boot there is always a question mark on the devices for that location. Approve option is greyed out. We checked multiple logs and suspected issues with the management point role. We re-installed the role on the server hoping this would fix our issue but no luck.

After more troubleshooting, we found errors in the BgbServer.log stating ” Failed to read settings from the registry.
Failed to initiate BGB server. wait 300 seconds to do initialization again.
CBgbServer:ReadRegistrySettings- Could not read encryption registry key HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftSMSNotificationServer on the server. The operating system reported error 2.

I have gone through all the previous articles and nothing seemed to have helped and this is only happening at a particular site’s client.

Can someone help with their experience the best way to troubleshoot it?

Regards,
Arvind Dubey

Finally, this issue has been resolved so felt like documenting our findings so it could turn out to be helpful for someone else in the coming time 🙂

The answer to this question was found in the below article of tech-net :

    Dear Anoop,

Yes, i did check and the client is also approved and registered as you instructed.

I also checked the article given for the troubleshooting and had the same error but with the error code 100061. Since our port 10023 was already opened and there was two registry Key were missing we have created them manually based on one of the articles found on the Technet and hoping to test the outcome tomorrow.

Would keep you posted and thanks for the beautiful article it helped to narrow down the issue to a great deal :).

Would sure to come and confirm the outcome soon Anoop. Thanks for your guidence.

    Regards,
    Arvind Dubey

    Dear Anoop,

Thanks a lot for your time and expertise!

That’s a beautiful and detailed article and I also followed this and came across the below result:
on the CcmNotificationAgent.log from the client side as mentioned by you in the article but in my case, the error code is 100061.

I have also checked the component status under monitoring and the Notification server showing as unknown and some other components for that site servers are also showing as unknown and not responding to any of our queries.

Upon extending the state messages for server notification it says:
CBgbServer:ReadRegistrySettings- Could not read encryption registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\NotificationServer on the server. The operating system reported error 2.

Also below is the log obtained from the :

we found errors in the BgbServer.log stating ” Failed to read settings from the registry.
Failed to initiate BGB server. wait 300 seconds to do initialization again.
CBgbServer:ReadRegistrySettings- Could not read encryption registry key HKLM\Software\Microsoft\SMS\NotificationServer on the server. The operating system reported error 2.

We checked with our firewall team and they said for security purposes they can’t disable the FW. Is there a way to address this?

Also, port TCP port 10123 is opened for inbound and outbound on all domains.

for the above error, i found one article online but would that be ok to make changes in the server i hope it won’t affect in any other way??

  1. – Approve option is greyed out because the client is already approved.

    – Question Mark (?) Unknown Status Icon means explained in the following article – https://www.anoopcnair.com/monitor-configmgr-client-status-sccm-online/

    – Troubleshooting could be done using https://www.anoopcnair.com/troubleshoot-sccm-fast-channel-push-notification-issues/

Have you already tried all these?
